Position Overview - We are looking for team players who enjoy working on challenging projects and are excited to be exposed to a variety of interesting technical engagements. This role is an excellent opportunity to develop a unique set of skills and experiences that will be certain to advance your career. As an Ascender, you'll work closely with passionate business owners across a range of industries, including manufacturing, biotech, technology, CPG firms, ecommerce, and more. Our clients typically have annual sales between $3M and $50M. Your primary responsibility will be providing accounting services for between two and five clients at a time.
Day-To-Day Responsibilities
Client-Facing (Hybrid)- As an On-Demand Accounting Consultant with Ascend, you will play a key role in helping our clients manage their accounting functions. In this role, you will:
Work closely with clients to understand their accounting processes and provide day-to-day support.
Train and coach client employees to develop their skills and improve their accounting processes.
Document key processes and make recommendations to optimize accounting functions for each client.
Develop and administer internal control procedures and policies that align with the needs of growing, entrepreneurial companies.
Handle monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closings in a timely manner.
Prepare financial statements and other financial reports to help clients make informed decisions.
Collaborate with the Ascend team and the client's external auditors (where applicable) to ensure efficient and accurate financial record keeping.
Office-Facing (Hybrid) - This position offers the opportunity to work closely with top CFOs and Controllers, while receiving mentorship and professional development opportunities to accelerate your career growth. As such, you will also share responsibility to:
Collaborate with the Ascend team to develop and improve our tools and data, driving the evolution of our work techniques.
Contribute to the development of new approaches and techniques to improve our services.
Work with the Ascend team to enhance our methodology and tools for better client outcomes.
Assist colleagues on other projects and initiatives as assigned or needed to ensure the success of the team.
Required Credentials
Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
Minimum of 5 years experience in a complex accounting environment, with a track record of achievements and increasing responsibility.
Competencies, Skills, and Experience necessary for success
Strong working knowledge of GAAP and managerial accounting principles, with knowledge of other accounting and cost control principles is preferred. Experience in public accounting and diverse accounting environments is also a plus.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel. Ability to quickly learn and become proficient in a variety of client ERP systems and reporting software packages.
Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks for multiple clients while maintaining focus, attention to detail, and confidentiality.
A self-starter who can work both independently and effectively as part of a team, with the confidence to handle diverse accounting scenarios and review the work of others.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to build strong relationships with clients and colleagues at all levels.
Analytical and technical mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Hybrid Work Environment
This position generally requires both a mix of remote work from your home-office and some on-site work at client locations. Clients are mainly located throughout northwest Vermont. You can expect to spend about 25% of your time at client sites, which may include office settings as well as manufacturing or warehouse facilities. All necessary safety precautions must be followed in these environments. Some clients require more on-site for specific roles/projects, some require none at all.
The primary duties of this role are performed while seated, and occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds may be required.
Time and Schedule Expectations
This is a full-time salaried position with a weekly schedule expectation of 40 hours. We also offer an independent contractor option (please inquire)
Most engagements are primarily remote with a reasonably flexible work schedule. Some engagements do require some on-site time for work or meetings. Typical business hours are the norm, with the rare evening or weekend work to meet a specific client deliverable.
We like and expect to work hard for our clients, but do not believe in burn-out!
